Let Go

Many of my photographs are digital images that have been heavily edited, distorted, and enhanced to achieve a specific appearance.  I often worry if my photos are “good enough” without editing.  Do they evoke the emotion I’m trying to convey?  How can I control the image in order to achieve my message?

This series explores the idea of letting go of control.  With digital photography it is easy to shoot endlessly and check the image right on the camera.  I wanted to challenge myself by shooting with film and allowing a single exposure for each.  Many of these were taken based solely on instinct and not trying to set up a perfect shot.  Some were shot while in a moving vehicle without looking through the viewfinder.

Can I express my emotions through photography without overthinking the process? Can an image still communicate something meaningful if I don’t control every aspect of it?

By accepting what I get rather than attempting to fix or perfect each photograph, I am learning to let go of control. The imperfections, accidents, and unpredictability of the process become part of the work.
